This is a throw back to childhood, but it used to make me cry because I believed so hard that my toys would come to life at night. I did love my toys and knew that with enough love they would live.
The Velveteen Rabbit is a classic tale about becoming a "real" bunny. But before he could do that he must go through some suffering. It may not be such a great book to read to a child because it will cause tears.

That book had the same effect on me! In fact, I still sometimes wonder what my dolls and toys do after I leave the room. The movie Toy Story touched on it, but not as sentimentally.
